Joint sawing cuts control (contraction) joints into new concrete slabs so that the inevitable shrinkage cracking occurs along straight, planned lines instead of wandering randomly across the surface. As concrete cures it shrinks; a sawn joint creates a weakened plane that concentrates the stress and hides the crack below the surface. Getting the timing and depth right is what separates a slab that cracks cleanly at the joints from one that spiders across the floor.
Joint sawing is used on virtually every new slab-on-grade — warehouse and industrial floors, parking areas, sidewalks and driveways — and to re-establish expansion joint cutting lines during repair. Timing is critical: conventional wet sawing is typically done within roughly the first 4–12 hours after finishing, once the slab can bear the saw without raveling but before shrinkage stress builds; early-entry dry-cut systems can go in even sooner. Joint depth is generally cut to about one-quarter of the slab thickness to reliably induce the crack at the joint.
