Flat, horizontal work: slab and joint sawing
Horizontal cutting is the most common category on Houston projects. Slab sawing — sometimes called flat sawing — uses a walk-behind saw with a diamond blade to cut floors, bridge decks, pavements and driveways where the blade can ride on the surface. It is the workhorse for demolition prep, expansion joints, and cutting out damaged sections for replacement. Joint sawing is a specialized form of flatwork focused on cutting control and contraction joints into fresh-to-green slabs so cracking happens where you want it, on a schedule dictated by the concrete's set.
For narrow linear excavation, trench cutting defines clean, straight edges before removal so a plumbing, electrical or drainage run can drop into a neat channel instead of a ragged break. These flatwork methods share a limitation: they only cut as deep as the blade radius allows and only where a saw can sit flat.
Vertical and overhead work: wall and wire sawing
When the cut is in a vertical face — a foundation wall, a tilt-up panel, an elevator shaft — wall sawing mounts a track to the surface and drives a blade along it, producing straight, precise openings for doors, windows, and mechanical penetrations. Wall saws handle thicknesses that overwhelm hand saws and leave edges square enough to finish.
For the thickest, most heavily reinforced, or oddly shaped sections — bridge piers, mass foundations, openings a blade simply cannot reach around — wire sawing pulls a diamond-beaded cable through the concrete in a loop. It has effectively no depth limit and can make cuts that no rotating blade can attempt, which is why it is the method of choice for heavy structural removal.
Round penetrations: core drilling
Concrete core drilling produces clean, round holes for plumbing stacks, electrical conduit, HVAC line sets, anchor and dowel installations, and material sampling. A diamond-tipped barrel bit rotates through the slab or wall, leaving a smooth bore and a solid cylindrical core. Coring is precise and low-vibration, which makes it the standard for penetrations in occupied buildings and finished spaces.
Tight spaces and detail work: hand sawing
Hand sawing covers the cuts that fixed-track and walk-behind equipment cannot reach — corners, curbs, small openings, and finish trimming where a portable ring or chain saw is the only tool that fits. It trades some of the speed and squareness of larger saws for reach and flexibility in confined conditions.
Before you cut: scanning
Cutting or coring blind into a Houston slab is a real hazard: post-tension tendons under tension, embedded rebar, and buried conduit are common, and severing them can be dangerous and expensive. Concrete scanning with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) maps what is inside the concrete before a blade or bit touches it. On post-tension slabs — which are widespread across Houston commercial and multifamily construction — scanning is not optional prudence, it is standard practice.
How to choose a method
