Why silica dust matters
Respirable crystalline silica is a regulated hazard
Concrete contains crystalline silica. Cutting, coring, and grinding it produces fine dust that can be inhaled deep into the lungs and is linked to silicosis, lung disease, and other conditions.
Because of this risk, silica exposure during construction work is regulated by OSHA under 29 CFR 1926.1153, the Respirable Crystalline Silica standard for construction. The standard sets a permissible exposure limit and requires employers to control exposure using engineering controls, work practices, and respiratory protection where needed.
Engineering controls
Dust control comes first
The most effective protection is preventing dust from becoming airborne. On concrete cutting and coring, that means water and vacuum controls used at the point of cutting — not just relying on masks.
