Choosing a Concrete Cutting Method: Slab, Wall, Core or Wire

Concrete cutting is not one technique — it is a family of them, each built around a different geometry problem. The right method for your job is usually obvious once you frame the question correctly: Is the surface horizontal or vertical? Do you need a round hole or a straight cut? How thick is the concrete, and how much room does the equipment have to work? Slab sawing uses a walk-behind saw with a rotating diamond blade to cut horizontal surfaces — floors, slabs on grade, pavement, bridge decks. It is the default for any straight cut on a flat surface: trench lines for utilities, control and expansion joints, and the perimeter cuts that let a section of slab be removed. Slab saws are fast and efficient within their depth range, and because the operator walks the machine along a chalk line, they produce long, straight, accurate cuts. When the cut is vertical — or on any surface a walk-behind saw cannot ride — wall sawing takes over. A track is anchored to the surface and a saw head travels along it, cutting precise straight lines regardless of orientation. This is the method for doorway and window openings in walls, for cutting elevated slabs from below or on steep surfaces, and for any straight cut that needs to be dead-accurate on a vertical face. Core drilling makes round holes. A cylindrical diamond-tipped bit rotates into the concrete and removes a solid core, leaving a clean, precise circular opening. It is the method for penetrations — plumbing and conduit runs, HVAC lines, floor drains, anchor and dowel holes, and test cores for material sampling. Diameters range from small conduit holes to large penetrations, and cores can be drilled vertically, horizontally or at an angle. Wire sawing is the heavy-duty specialist. A diamond-beaded cable is looped around the concrete and driven at speed, slicing through mass that is too thick, too irregular, or too heavily reinforced for a blade. It has effectively no depth limit — the wire simply wraps whatever it needs to cut — which makes it the method for massive foundations, bridge components, thick columns and large structural members.
